Farmers Market opens in Elkins with fresh produce

On Friday afternoons from 3 p. m. to dusk and on Sundays from noon to dusk, locals can find area farmers selling produce in front of Medicine Man Animal Health Supply at 2049 Twin Oaks Drive, Elkins.

According to market manager Bishop Bower, tlocal growers involved are 90 percent organic growers. “ No produce is allowed that the farmer didn’t grow himself, ” he said.

Bishop added that involved farmers agree to have their farms inspected by the manager periodically for verification.

“ There is no charge for local growers to sell with us, ” Bower said. He also expressed his gratitiude to Medicine Man Animal Supply to allow the Market members to set up in front of his store.

“ He is giving us a chance to get started, ” Bower said.

Produce for sale include squash, cucumbers, several kinds of lettuce, herbs, kohlrabi, radishs and peppers, according to Bower. “ We have some tomatoes now, but only green ones, ” he said. “ We’ll soon have vine ripe red tomatoes for sale also. ” For information to sell produce at this new Farmer’s Market, call Bishop Bower at 479-643-4298.
