AVOCA - Friends and members of Avoca Fire and Rescue Department celebrated the retirement of Captain Tony Miltich with a dinner at the station Sept. 28. Tony began volunteering with the Lake Wedington Fire Department in Washington County when he was 53 years old. After serving three years on the Lake Wedington Department, Tony and his wife, Suzan, moved to Beaver Lake where he joined the Avoca Fire Department.

In the 11 years Tony served with Avoca, his administrative experience has been invaluable. He brought the departmental records and accounting into the computer age. He was instrumental in updating departmental policies and the board of directors. Tony worked for a grant for Avoca's Rescue Boat, and he did much of the work getting voters to approve having the County Collector collect membership dues, which will finance departmental improvements, which will result in lower insurance rates for homeowners. Board members of the Avoca Fire and Rescue Department recently elected Miltich as president of the board where he will continue to serve.

Also during the retirement dinner, members recognized Chief Frankie Elliott and Lt. Larry Hockenberry for 20 years of service on Avoca Fire Department.
