’Til Next Time : Animals trying to move in — no way!
Posted on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
I read in the newspaper that the Attorney General was working on an animal cruelty bill. I'm glad my animals can't write or e-mail.
The back part of my house is waiting on cooler weather for finishing up construction. It's a screened-in and carpeted back porch and storage room.
The screen door has been propped open and one wall is missing. One chilly day last week I opened the living room door and found myself looking down into the eyes of 11 almost-grown hens. I said "Shoo "and nothing happened. They finally moved on, but grudgingly.
Ten minutes later the same thing happened. "Okay girls," I said," I know you started your lives down here under a heat lamp but your residence is now up at the barn in the chicken house. It may not be the Ritz but it is warm and dry. I will clean it before winter and use fresh straw. Next spring I'll see about getting you a rooster, but you are not spending the winter on a carpeted porch !"
I cleaned and straightened construction material, pulled screen doors shut and put up barriers. Now the dogs think their throats have been cut because they no longer can come in. I'm a farm girl but don't intend to share living quarters with my animals, so I am glad they can't voice their complaints.
My energy efficient rooms are sure paying off in lower utility bills. Doug Rye would be proud of my men.
I received another letter from my grandson in Marine boot comp and this time he put in an order for noodles when he's home. You know he'll get them !
