Please excuse my lack of a column these past few weeks. The first of September, I traveled (yes, I actually left the state of Arkansas ) to Santa Fe, N. M., with my mom and uncle, so of course, I forgot to write the column. The next week I have no excuse, so we will just skip that one. Then, the week after that, I got this strange flu (it is still iffy exactly what I had ) and I felt so badly that I could not even write a column or work at the library; as a matter of fact I felt so badly that if Elvis had shown up in his pink Cadillac to take me on a date, I would not have even answered the door ! My dear niece Amanda filled in for me.

I am back and hopefully the library will soon get in shape; all of the back-ordered new releases arrived at once, so I am busy getting them ready for the shelves.

The library's annual October Reading Contest is starting Tuesday, Oct. 7, through Thursday, Oct. 30. It is open to kindergarten through fifth grade. Whoever reads the most books during the month of October will win a Halloween book for their reading level.

Be sure to turn in your reading logs by 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. You can receive your prize on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. (when you are trick-or-treating ). For more information, call the library at 451-8442.

Also, remember, the library will be trick-or-treating from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. We always have great treat bags (not too much candy, Moms, I promise ). The winners of the contest can also receive their prize then.

Here is a sample of the new books received; come by and "check"them out.

"The Outsider"by Ann H. Gabhart - Gabrielle Hope and her mother joined the Harmony Hill Shaker community in 1807. Gabrielle embraced the promise of stability and devotion that they promised. But when a local doctor must be brought into Harmony Hill from the outside, he sets into motion evens that will challenge her loyalty to the Shakers. As she falls deeper into forbidden love for this man of the world, Gabrielle must make a choice. Can she experience true happiness in this simple community ? Or will she abandon her brothers and sisters for a life of the unknown ?

"A Catered Halloween"by Isis Crawford - Catering sisters Bernadete and Libby agree to cater the charity haunted house being held in the old Peabody School. The gothic building is a perfect setting for a haunted house fundraiser. There are even stories floating around that a ghost haunts Peabody School. And when wealthy socialite Amethyst Applegate is found dead in the haunted house, the sisters wonder if a murderer might also be lurking about.

"Brisinger"by Christopher Paolini - this is the third book in the "Eragon"series about Eragon the Rider and his dragon, Saphira. Eragon and Saphira narrowly escaped the colossal battle against the Empire's warriors on the Burning Plains. Now more adventure is at hand for the Rider and his dragon, as Eragon finds himself trying to help rescue Roran's beloved from King Galbatorix's clutches. And soon Eragon finds the unrest and danger of the country will make him make choices, choices that may lead to unimagined sacrifice.

"Halloween Tricks and Treats"by Matthew Mead - this is a great book of crafts and food to help celebrate that fun "dress-up"day, as my children used to call it. Nothing too scary or icky in it, just smiling ghosts and pumpkins to make the annual stock-up-ofcandy-for-the-winter-day a little more fun.

Hope these books sound appealing - be sure to come by and look them over. Library hours are 4 to 8 p. m., Tuesday; 1 to 5 p. m., Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 5 p. m., Thursday, closed at noon for lunch. The library phone is 451-8442.
