ArkAppella Show Chorus

ArkAppella Show Chorus, after completing all steps in the chartering process and being approved by the international board of directors, received their official charter as a Sweet Adelines International Chapter at the Eisemann Center in Richardson, Texas, April 25. Peggy Gramm, president of Sweet Adelines International, and Sarah Montgomery, region 25 membership coordinator, presented the official charter to Brenda Fleming, director, and Marilyn Annen, team coordinator of the ArkAppella Show Chorus of Springdale.

The charter assures membership in an organization that not only teaches and performs music in the barbershop style, but also nurtures friendships, love and harmony that reach far beyond the individual chapter, its rehearsals and performances. Sweet Adelines International offers a variety of educational experiences, such as annual summer music camps for all members, additional classes in directing, arranging, judging and leadership. These programs continually expand members ’ knowledge about the organization and the art form.

Region 25 consists Arkansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Texas and Oklahoma. It held its annual meeting and chorus competition April 24-27 in Richardson. ArkAppella Show Chorus members Wilma Forbes and Bridget Martin presented the chorus flag during the annual March of Flags; Billye Martin was selected as the representative for all Arkansas choruses, participating in and winning a special preshow contest. As an inducement to spending 15 minutes on boating safety, free hot dogs and coke are being offered to the captain and crew of each boat that is checked by certified United States Power Squadron inspectors.

The U. S. Coast Guard approved VSC is being offered as a public service by the Beaver Lake Sail and Power Squadron. Boats may already be in the water or on trailers.

Before taking to the waterways, boats should be properly equipped. This includes correct display of hull registration numbers, registration certificate on board, PFDs, ignition safety switch, backfire flame arrestor for inboards or stern drives, ventilation system, type B fire extinguisher, a sound producing device such as a horn, whistle or bell, visual distress signals such as a flashlight and navigation lights. The overall condition of the boat is checked for safety.

A handbook of Arkansas Boating Laws and Responsibilities will also be available upon request, which details registration, education requirements for those born after Jan. 1, 1986, hull identification numbers, weather emergencies, navigation rules and other information.

Those boats which pass inspection will be issued an attractive 2008 sticker to be displayed. No appointment is necessary. There will be numerous squadron members available to assist. For more information, contact squadron safety officer Len Oswald at 925-1193.
