BROOKE McNEELY Northwest Arkansas Times University of Arkansas student Meghan Ness, left, paints one of Alejandro Ruiz-Martinez’s fingernails pink Wednesday afternoon as part of “ Pynk Week ” in front of the Arkansas Union. Ness is working with Pomfret Hall Senate to help raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The University of Arkansas campus sported pink Wednesday.
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a couple of campus organizations were outside the Arkansas Union raising awareness and funds for the cause during "Pynk Week."
UA student Steve Sparks, founder and president of the university's chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, said this is the second year the group has existed.
"Two summers ago I was looking for an organization to get involved with," he said.
His life had been touched by cancer. His dad was diagnosed with colon cancer when he was younger.
"The American Cancer Society raises awareness in all types of cancer," he said. After contacting the society, he formed the local Colleges Against Cancer group.
He said the group currently has 120 active members and is steadily growing.
The Great American Smokeout in November and Relay for Life in April are two other major projects the group promotes.
The Pomfret Hall Senate also had a booth setup in the Union. Their Paint Your Nails Pink promotion painted nails for a donation.
Pomfret Hall Senate member Lisa Turner said all the funds raised will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
