Contestants needed for county pageant Contestants are needed for the Washington County Fair Pageant. Residents of Washington County from newborn to 21 years old may compete for the titles of Washington County Fair Royalty, who will serve as ambassadors to the Washington County Fair. The newly crowned Miss Washington County will also compete in the State Fair Queen Pageant in October in Little Rock. The 2008 pageant will take place Aug. 16 at the University of Arkansas Alltel Ballroom. The deadline to enter is Aug. 8. No entries will be taken the day of the pageant. UA grad national singing success Sarah Mesko, a 2008 graduate of the University of Arkansas, won first place in two prestigious national singing competitions this past spring. In March she was declared the winner of the Franco-American Vocal Academy's Grands Concours de Chant, singing both concert and operatic literature in French. She received a $ 5, 000 award. In May, Mesko won first prize and $ 10, 000 at the national singing competition of the National Society of Arts and Letters at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.
Some of her performances include "The Messiah"with the Fort Smith Symphony, the role of Kate Pinkerton in "Madama Butterfly"with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, and Dorothée in "Cendrillon"with the Aspen Opera Theater Center.
Mesko has appeared as a soloist with the North Arkansas Symphony and the Sinfonia of the Aspen Music Festival as well as the Hot Springs Music Festival, Arkansas Youth and University of Arkansas Symphony orchestras. In 2008-09 she will rejoin the Fort Smith Symphony for a performance of Bach's Mass in B Minor.
Sarah earned a bachelor of music degree in both vocal and flute performance from the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. She was a recipient of the Bodenhamer Fellowship, graduated summa cum laude, was a First-Ranked Senior Scholar, received the Harold D. Hantz Four-Year Scholar Award and was a student speaker at the 2008 Fulbright College commencement ceremony. Mesko is the vocal student of Janice Yoes at the UA, and is the daughter of Allan and Kathy Mesko of Hot Springs.
She will begin her graduate studies this fall at Rice University in Houston. Angus-Haley celebrates 95 th birthday with recital Mary Jane Angus-Haley will celebrate her 95 th birthday with her fourth piano recital at 2 p.m. today at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 1400 E. Rolling Hills Drive in Fayetteville.
Angus-Haley and her family have been an active part of Fayetteville since the 1920 s. She graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1930 and the University of Arkansas in 1934. She was organist at First Baptist Church until she married. She was a writer for the Southern Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tenn., and her materials were used for junior highaged children from 1948-1970 s. When she and her husband retired in 1978, they moved back to Fayetteville where she enrolled at the University of Arkansas and continued to perform and study organ and harpsichord. She served as church organist at Rolling Hills Baptist Church until she retired at age 90, yet she still performs periodically. She has performed for her 80 th, 85 th and 90 th birthdays. Pet photo contest Washington Country pet owners are eligible to enter the International Pet Owners Club's 2008 Summer Cutest Pet Photo Contest. Hill new face on trustees board Jeanie Bartlett Hill recently accepted a position on the Ozark Guidance Foundation Board of Trustees. She first learned about Ozark Guidance many years ago while teaching and has seen first-hand the benefits of mental health services with her students. She joined the Ozark Guidance Governing Board of Directors in 2006.
Hill has been an active volunteer in Northwest Arkansas, founding and coaching the Woodland Soccer Association. She received the Dorothy Lindquist Volunteer of the Year award for Fayetteville Public Schools in 2004.
In her new position as trustee, she will assist the foundation in new resource development to fund the Ozark Guidance mission of providing high quality, cost-effective mental health care services to Northwest Arkansas.
