ROGERS — Woodland usually set the tone with defense and Thursday against the Rogers High ninth grade team was no exception.

The Cowboys allowed minus-14 yards in the first half and quarterback Austin Allen threw for three first-half scores as Woodland posted a 26-0 win to set up next week’s battle with Springdale Central.

“ Our defense has been solid for us all year long, ” Woodland coach Bobby Crockett said. “ They continue to play well and did a great job. ”

In addition to ruling the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys (6-1, 4-1 ) also ruled the airwaves. Allen threw for © first-half yards and finished the night 10 of 14 for 203 yards and three touchdowns.

Woodland started asserting itself through the air on its first series. Facing a thirdand-22, Allen and Tyler Tuck hooked up on the first of two scoring connections. This one covered 71 yards as Tuck made his way past the defense on a crossing pattern.

After an unsuccessful Rogers fake punt attempt, Allen wasted little time getting the Cowboys on the board again. He connected again with Tuck, this time for 39 yards and a 13-0 lead with 3: 22 left in the second quarter.

On the next Rogers (0-7, 0-5 ) drive, Woodland recorded its second of two interceptions for the half. Tuck returned this one to the Mountie 22.

On the next play from scrimmage, Allen found another target, Reid Holmes, for a 19-0 halftime lead.

“ Austin is getting better every game, ” Crockett said. “ He’s an eighth grader, throwing the ball to our kids and doing a really good job. He’s giving us opportunities in our passing game.

“ He understands what we’re doing. He messes up on some things as an eighth grader but he is throwing the ball and making our offense better. He gives us a dual threat with our offense. ”

Allen found Tuck for 12 and Mark Hollenbeck for 22 on Woodland’s second drive of the third quarter. Farico Baymon capped the fiveplay, 53-yard drive with a scoring sweep from 5 yards out.

Crockett said his team was successful in guarding against looking ahead to next week and powerful Central.

“ Our kids came out and did a good job from start to finish tonight, ” he said. “ We got a lot of kids in the game and that means a lot to us. ”
