A chili supper and raffle fundraiser designed to benefit the family of Springdale police officer Craig Chastain, who died Christmas Day after fighting cancer, raised $3,100 Tuesday evening.
The event was held at the Washington County Sheriff's Office and organized by employees of the Children's Safety Center in Springdale and the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division.
Elizabeth Shackelford, Children's Safety Center development director, said they raised more than $3,100 directly from the event and $500 in online donations. Additional money was raised from other sources. It put the total amount raised at about $4,000, she said.
"It was for his family, for his medical expenses," Shackelford said.
About 200 people attended the event. Chastain was the Springdale Officer of the Year for 2007, Shackelford said. His wife, Karis, works for the Crimes Against Children Division, according to division employee Brandy Foshe. Chastain had reportedly been diagnosed with a rare form of advanced sarcoma and had been receiving treatment in Chicago prior to his death. Shackelford said continued donations for the family can be sent to her attention at the center office, 614 E. Emma, Suite 200, Springdale, AR 72764.
