A Fayetteville man must serve 15 years in prison after admitting on Monday that he broke into the Head Start building, caused property damage and stole a vehicle.

Joel Glen Sylvester, 25, entered a negotiated guilty plea Monday to commercial burglary, first-degree criminal mischief and theft of property. He was sentenced to a total of 25 years: 15 years in the Department of Correction and 10 years suspended. Sylvester is accused of breaking into the Head Start office at 1643 E. Huntsville Road with a juvenile on Aug. 26. The two damaged several pieces of office equipment, furniture, files, kitchen appliances and miscellaneous other items.

The two also used plastic cups to plug an upstairs sink and allowed the faucet to run throughout the night, according to the police report. The water damaged a large section of the upstairs flooring, eventually spilling into the downstairs hallway. Several electronic items were taken from various locations inside the building, according to the report.

He is also accused of stealing a 1999 Honda Accord vehicle used by Head Start from the parking lot.
