Windy conditions prompted the Fayetteville Fire Department to issue no burn permits Wednesday.

“We make a determination each day, during shift change, if we want to issue burn permits,” said Fayetteville Battalion Chief Terry Lawson. “Any time the wind picks up, like it has in the last few days, we won’t issue permits to try and prevent any problems that might occur.”

Permits are also not issued on days when the county has instated a burn ban.

Assistant Washington County Fire Marshal Laurie Roy said the fire marshal’s office hadn’t issued a burn ban for the county as of Wednesday.

In Fayetteville, burn permits are required for construction site burning and for residents who plan to burn yard waste such as branches, leaves or shrubbery.

Burn permits have been a requirement in Fayetteville since 2006. They are free of charge and can be obtained by calling Fire Station No. 1 at 442-6131. Callers will be asked to provide their name, the address where the burn is to take place, their phone number and a description of what is to be burned. The information is then logged into a computer and a permit number is generated and given to the caller. Permits should be requested on the day the burn is set to take place.

Lawson said residents caught burning without a permit will be cited.

City ordinances about burning requirements apply to both construction site and residential brush burning.

The following is a list of burn requirements in Fayetteville:

Only limbs, leaves, grass and yard waste can be burned

Burning of any building materials and other manmade products is prohibited and can lead to fines

The fire must be at least 50 feet from any structure or vehicle

A garden hose or some extinguishing agent should be near in case the fire gets out of control

Burning must be completed before dark

Someone should be with the fire until it has completely burned out or has been extinguished
