Local lawmakers receive committee assignments for legislative session

State Sen. Sue Madison of Fayetteville became chairman of the Arkansas Senate’s Committee on City, County and Local Affairs Tuesday as senators in Little Rock received their committee assignments for the 87th General Assembly. Madison, Sen. Bill Pritchard of Elkins and Sen. Ruth Whitaker of Cedarville, who represent Districts 7, 35 and 3, respectively, in Washington County, each received their appointments Tuesday. Appointments to committees generally give senators more influence than noncommittee members over the legislation those committees review. The following is a list of committee assignments for senators representing Washington County:

• Member — Public Health, Welfare and Labor; State Agencies and Governmental Affairs; Joint Performance Review; Rules, Resolutions and Memorials; Legislative Joint Auditing Committee • Alternate — Joint Budget Committee

• Chairman — Rules, Resolutions and Memorials

• Vice chairman — Judiciary

• Member — Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development; Joint Energy; Joint Budget Committee; Arkansas Legislative Council

Arkansas House of Representatives members made their committee selections Nov. 7. Representatives’ choices are granted based on seniority for each 20-member committee.

The following is a list of Washington County lawmakers and the committees they will serve on:

• Mark Martin, Prairie Grove, District 87 — Education; Insurance and Commerce; Joint Budget Committee; alternate, Arkansas Legislative Council.

• Jim House, Fayetteville, District 89 — Revenue and Taxation; Agriculture, Forestry and Economic Development; Legislative Joint Auditing Committee.

• Lindsley Smith, Fayetteville, District 92 — Judiciary; State Agencies and Governmental Affairs; Legislative Joint Auditing Committee; alternate, Arkansas Legislative Council.

• Uvalde Lindsey, Fayetteville, District 88 — Revenue and Taxation; State Agencies and Governmental Affairs; alternate, Joint Budget Committee.

• Jonathan Barnett, Siloam Springs, District 97 — Public transportation; Aging, Children and Youth, Legislative and Military Affairs; alternate, Arkansas Legislative Council.
