Small fire breaks out in Farmington HS bathroom

FARMINGTON — A minor fire occurred in a boys bathroom Monday morning at Farmington High School.
Farmington firefighters responded to the school at about 9:30 a.m. after witnesses reported a fire in the bathroom.
“It started in one of the toilet paper dispensers,” Farmington Fire Chief Mark Cunningham said. “It burned from there up to the ceiling.”
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and set up fans to ventilate the building.
Students were evacuated from the building for the rest of the day.
“We didn’t hold class in that building, but we did make room in other areas of the school,” said Ron Wright, superintendent for the Farmington School District. “We made room in the library, the cafeteria, the gym — places like that.”
Wright said the fire didn’t cause significant damage to the building or any other structure.
“There was smoke damage and a lot of dust from the fire extinguisher,” he said. “All Clean Restoration Services came in this afternoon, and they’re getting everything fixed up. When you go in there tomorrow, you won’t even be able to tell there was a fire in the building.”
The cause of the fire hasn’t been determined but was being investigated by Farmington police Monday. Wright said the student or students responsible for the damage will face punishment as determined by the principal.
“We’ve been working on this all day, but we’re not ready to name a name yet,” he said. “We’re pretty sure that it was a male student since it was in the boys bathroom. I’m sure the person responsible will have to pay for restitution and possibly answer any civil charges against him, in addition to facing the principal. I don’t know if they understood how serious their actions were, but I believe the consequences should be equally as serious.”
