Builders of Northwest Arkansas honored at banquet

Men and women who’ve physically made Northwest Arkansas a better place to live were honored at the seventh annual Construction Industry Appreciation Night on Monday. The event was put on by the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce.
Ten awards were given to developers displaying things like excellence in reuse, vision, community outreach and sustainability in their work.
Jeff Borgsmiller, chairman of the Chamber’s Construction / Developers Committee, stated that the event is meant to highlight some of the year’s most eye-grabbing, useful and cuttingedge buildings and developments. Something that carries a little more importance during the recent economic downturn.
“ We’re recognizing these people that are still out there working, ” Borgsmiller said. “ It’s important to show that there is still work out there being done. ”
Jeff Collins, with Streetsmart Data Services, emceed the event. He pointed out that through his research he’s seen that Northwest Arkansas has avoided much of what the nation has seen in terms of economic downturn lately, adding that it shows through the continued construction and job creation in Northwest Arkansas. He said buildings are still filling up, maybe slower than they were five years ago, but they are.
The audience got to hear what might be the next “ big thing” for the world when Dan Sanker, executive director of the Green Valley Network, shared his vision of Northwest Arkansas being the heart of the sustainability movement and capitalizing on an opportunity the rest of the world is a few steps behind on.
“ We need to do everything we can to set the stage here on what might be the next big thing for the world, ” said Sanker, who is president and CEO of CaseStack in Fayetteville.
He noted that Northwest Arkansas is the perfect place for green or clean technology businesses to set up shop and he hopes they choose to do so.

Landmark Award — Pat Walker Senior Center by Washington Regional Medical Center;
Community Outreach — Seven Hills Homeless Shelter Transitional Living Facility by Seven Hills Homeless Shelter;
Supplier of the Year — Fayetteville City Lumber;
Visionary Development Award — Pratt Place Inn;
Green Award — Biobase Family of Companies;
Residential Developer of the Year Award — Village at Scull Creek, Quality of Life Associates; and
Commercial Contractor of the Year Award — Flintco Inc.
