The Arkansas State Highway Commission has opened bids for improvements to bridges on U.S. 71 in Washington County, according to Commission Chairman Jonathan Barnett of Siloam Springs.

The purpose of the project is to replace four bridges, and it was awarded to APAC-Arkansas Inc. of Fayetteville for $9,865,136.

"They were just put on the program, quite a while ago,"Ed Hoppe, programs and contracts division head for the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, said. "We're just getting around to having the funds for them."

He said these bridge replacements are the "normal progression of projects."

The first bridge is over Mill Creek just south of West Fork. The second and third bridges are over London and Hutchins creeks each on either side of Brentwood. The fourth is an extension over the West Fork of the White River, just on the north edge of Winslow.

Work could begin on the project in six to eight weeks, weather permitting, Barnett said. Completion is expected in mid-2010.
