The American Red Cross is joining a nationwide effort to raise awareness about the importance of being prepared this September during National Preparedness Month 2008.

As part of the local promotion, the Northwest Arkansas Red Cross Chapter will participate in two Disaster Preparedness Expos being held in the area. The first Preparedness Expo will be held in Bella Vista from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at the Reardon Center.

The second Expo, sponsored in part by Pinnacle Mall and the Benton County Office of Emergency Management, will be held Sept. 13 at the Pinnacle Mall in Rogers.

"With the effects of Hurricane Gustav still being felt throughout the region, and several other named storms on the horizon, now is the time for making preparations," Carmen Newberry, emergency services director at the local Red Cross in Tontitown, said.

Supplies will be available to help families prepare their personal disaster and communication plans, as well as resources for families to sign up for disaster preparedness workshops and CPR classes.

In addition, this year the National American Red Cross has created a new National Preparedness Month Web site at www. redcross. org / preparedness / NPM / for the public that features training and educational resources to help Americans prepare for disasters and other emergencies.
