Schools recognized by council for fitness efforts

Fayetteville Public Schools will be recognized by the Arkansas Governor’s Council on Fitness during a Little Rock ceremony today for its efforts to positively affect the health and fitness of Arkansans.

The school district will receive the Leadership in Fitness Award for a government agency.

Each year the Arkansas Governor’s Council on Fitness and Baptist Health recognize those individuals and companies whose efforts have positively affected the health and fitness of Arkansans. The Leadership Awards Ceremony will be hosted by Ray Tucker, executive director of the Arkansas’ Sports Hall of Fame and presented by Lt. Gov. Bill Halter. Peers, groups and corporate partners nominated the winners. The 2008 top nominees in nine categories for significant contributions to the promotion of physical fitness are as follows:

Individual of the Year — Jacqueline Clinton, Cabot

Senior of the Year — Milanie Matthews, Ozark

Physical Educator — Christy Ralph, Bentonville

Outstanding Group — Rogers Community School Recreation Association, Rogers

Health & Fitness Club —Foundation Fitness Systems Inc., Arkadelphia

School or School District — Magness Creek Elementary School, Cabot

Government Agency — Fayetteville Public Schools, Fayetteville

Trails — Hot Springs Village Trails Committee, Hot Springs

Corporate Leadership — Windstream Corp., Little Rock

The mission of the Arkansas Governor’s Council on Fitness is to encourage the citizens of Arkansas to participate more actively in health and fitness activities and help them live healthier, happier and more productive lives.
