School board hopefuls to debate

Fayetteville School District Board of Education candidates will face off today during a pair of debates sponsored by the city of Fayetteville Government Channel and the Washington County Chapter of the League of Women Voters.
The candidate debates will take place in Room 219 at City Hall.
The first debate, which starts at 6 p. m., will be for school board Position 1 and will include four of the six candidates: Stacy Furlow, Jim Halsell, Mike Malony and Conrad Odom. Also running for that seat are Jeanie Hill and Joe Lee The second debate, set to start at 8: 30 p. m., is for school board Position 2 with candidates Susan Heil and James McGinty.
The League of Women Voters will provide the moderator, Barbara Taylor, and the time keeper, Susan Rausch.
The league has set the rules for the debate and developed the questions for the candidates. The debates will air this weekend on the Fayetteville Government Channel, Cox Cable Channel 16.
The Position 1 debate will be replayed at 9 a. m., 2 p.m. and 9: 30 p.m. Thursday; 8: 30 p.m. Friday; and noon, 5: 30 p.m. and 11: 15 p.m. Saturday.
The Position 2 debates will be replayed at 11 a.m. and 8: 30 p.m. Thursday; 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. Friday; and 11 a. m., 4: 30 p.m. and 10: 15 p.m. Saturday.
The league is currently working with the Fayetteville Government Channel staff to set the dates for additional debates including those for City Council and mayor. The league has agreed to coordinate the production of all candidate debates in 2008 which could number as many as 15 debates.
All debates will be shown on the Fayetteville Government Channel. As the election nears, the channel is planning "Debate Days," which will be days on which the candidate debates dominate the playback schedule to ensure that citizens have ample opportunity to learn about the candidates and their positions.
