UA student is sixth candidate to file for Fayetteville mayor

A 19-year-old University of Arkansas sophomore filed for mayor of Fayetteville on Tuesday, the last day to file for municipal offices in Washington County for the Nov. 4 election.
Sami Sutton said she decided in ninth grade that she wants to be president. Her history teacher told her that she needs to run for lower offices first to gain the necessary experience, she said in an interview Tuesday.
Sutton becomes the sixth candidate for Fayetteville mayor. Others include Mayor Dan Coody, Lioneld Jordan, Steve Clark, Adam Fire Cat, and Walt Eilers.
If elected, Sutton said she'd like to expand the city's recycling program and bring business back to Fayetteville. She'd also like to see the city provide more youth activities and better organize its trail and road construction projects, she said.
She has lived in Fayetteville for about nine years and currently works at Wal-Mart as a sales associate, she said.
Fayetteville Alderman Bobby Ferrell is unopposed in his re-election bid for his Ward 3 seat. Incumbent Brenda Thiel faces a challenge from Don Conner for her Ward 1 seat. Mark Kinion and Matthew Petty have filed for the Ward 2 seat currently held by Nancy Allen, who is not seeking re-election. Craig Honchell, Sarah Lewis and Bernard Sulliban are seeking the Ward 4 seat currently held by Jordan, who is running for mayor.
Springdale races Six candidates are also running for mayor of Springdale, where Mayor Jerre Vanhoose is not seeking reelection. These candidates include Ray Dotson, Nancy Deason Jenkins, Mike Overton, Jim Reed, Doug Sprouse and Ken Watson. Every city council race in Springdale is contested with two incumbents facing three challengers. City Clerk Denise Pearce is unopposed Incumbent Kathy Jaycox faces challenges from Eddie Free, Craig Graves and A. L. Hollingsworth for her Ward 1 seat on the council. Alderman Ricky Evans is opposed by Danny Ferrar, Ed Gillean and Randy Ponders for his Ward 2 seat. Josh Jenkins and Teresa Powers are challenging incumbent Jeff Watson in Ward 3. Ruth Strebe Motes is challenging incumbent Eric Ford in Ward 4.
Most smaller city races uncontested Every seat on the Elkins City Council is contested, while all of the alderman candidates in Lincoln, Farmington, Prairie Grove, Winslow, Goshen, Elm Springs and Johnson are unopposed. None of the mayors are up for re-election in the county's small cities and towns. In Elkins, incumbent Jeremy Stevens faces a challenge from John Snell for the Ward 1, Position 1 seat. Phillip Southan is running against incumbent Bonnie Wilcox for the Ward 1, Position 2 seat. Alderman Bobby McGarrah faces a challenge from Terri Miller for the Ward 2, Position 1 seat, while Henry Hickman is running against incumbent Bruce Ledford for the Ward 2, Position 2 seat. Chris Dunivan and Duane Foster have both filed for the Ward 3, Position 1 seat, and Lloyd Stith faces Bob Cox for the Ward 3, Position 2 seat.
Elkins Recorder-Treasurer Constance Tober faces a challenges from Sunny Ledford.
In Tontitown, four of the six council seats are contested. Incumbent Ken Robertson is unopposed for his Ward 3 seat and Robert "Bobby"Pianalto is unopposed for the Ward 2, position 2 seat currently held by David Sbanatto.
David Bolinger is challenging incumbent Sunny Hinshaw for the Ward 1, Position 1 seat, while James Main is running against incumbent Henry C. Piazza for the Ward 1, Position 2 seat.
Larry Bain filed against incumbent Arthur Penzo for the Ward 2, Position 1 seat, and Julienne Zulpo Bowling faces Gary Musinno for the Ward 3 seat currently held by Becky Alston.
Alston and Amy Pianalto are both running for recorder-treasurer.
In Lincoln, unopposed City Council candidates include Douglas R. Moore and Burt F. Carter in Ward 1, Don Brown and Doug Hutchens in Ward 2, Bobby McDonald and Danny Bush in Ward 3, and Doyle W. Dixon and Glee Hale in Ward 4. All are incumbents.
In Farmington, all of the City Council candidates are unopposed, including Pam S. Delaney and Patsy Pike in Ward 1, Janie R. Steele and Keith Lipford in Ward 2, Brenda L. Cunningham and Gail Biswell True in Ward 3, and Bobby Morgan and Terry Yopp in Ward 4. All of the candidates except True are incumbents.
In Prairie Grove, all of the incumbent City Council candidates are unopposed, including Matthew Shreve in Ward 1, M'laine Tyree and Fred Collins in Ward 2, B. R. "Buddy"Lyle and Paul M. "Murph"Pair in Ward 3, and Marquita Smith and Eugene Hamilton in Ward 4.
In Greenland, only three seats are contested. Ray Hathaway is running against incumbent Danny Dutton in Ward 2, and Lonnie Meadows is challenging incumbent Carroll Hancock in Ward 3 and Stephanie Sawyer is running against incumbent Johnny James in Ward 3 Unopposed Greenland City Council candidates include Bill Groom and Lisa Thornton in Ward 1, Stephanie Sharp in Ward 2 and Mark Myers and Greg White in Ward 4. Long-time Recorder-Treasurer Donna Cheever is also unopposed.
In West Fork, two City Council races for open seats are contested. Four incumbents are unopposed. Rodney Drymon and Frances Hime seek the Ward 1, Position 1 seat, while Bryan "Moe"Greenoe and John Robert Richard are competing for the Ward 1, Position 2 seat. Unopposed council candidates include Misty Caudle and Justin Harris in Ward 2, Anita Lowery in Ward 3 and Jan Throgmorton and Julie Shafer in Ward 4 Susan Cooney and Brandy Rollins have both filed for West Fork City Clerk. In Johnson, unopposed City Council candidates include Bill Burnett and Theodore "Buddy"Curry in Ward 1, Bob Fant and Clay Dodson in Ward 2, and Melissa Tomlinson and Tom Bramlett in Ward 3. Recorder-Treasurer Jennifer Allen is also unopposed.
In Winslow, unopposed City Council candidates are Don Clark and Diane Rickman in Ward 1, Velma H. Duncan and Barbara Ashbaugh in Ward 2, and Leta R. McGuire and Marsha L. Cooley in Ward 3. Mary Bromley is unopposed as recorder-treasurer. In Goshen, unopposed City Council candidates are Andy Bethel, Paula Anderson, Richard Seddon and Joshua Lockhart. Cheryl Willock is unopposed as recorder-treasurer. In Elm Springs, unopposed City Council candidates are Allen Holcomb, Kay Bower, Dennis Doty, Randy "R. L. "Lott and Ralph Blythe. City Clerk Glenda Pettus is unopposed.
