Fire marshal says arson likely in Sugartree blaze

A suspicious fire at a local apartment complex has been labeled "incendiary"by the Fayetteville Fire Marshal's Office.
Fayetteville Battalion Chief Terry Lawson said the fire marshal's office recently completed its initial investigation into the Aug. 1 blaze that left a Sugar Creek Apartment resident injured. Preliminary findings of the investigation revealed that the fire was likely set intentionally.
"[Investigators ] collected samples from the scene and submitted them to the [Arkansas State ] Crime Lab in Little Rock," Lawson said. "They're waiting on those results right now, but it could take a long time. "
A joint investigation between the fire marshal's office and the Fayetteville Police Department remains underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire. So far, no arrests have been made.
Authorities are seeking a black male suspect, approximately 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, with a stocky build, short hair and a mustache. He was reportedly wearing a red shirt at the time of the incident.
Firefighters were called to the Sugartree Apartments, 833 W. Sycamore St., Apt. 12, on Aug. 1 at 5: 24 a.m.
At the scene, first responders reported seeing heavy smoke coming from a ground-floor apartment of the two-story building.
According to a report issued by the Fayetteville Fi re Depar tment, three fire engines, two ladder trucks and a command unit launched a coordinated plan including a fire attack, search team, water supply and other support functions. Two teams entered the burning apartment, which was occupied by Betty Tyson, 50.
She was discovered by the search team in the rear bedroom of the apartment. Central Emergency Medical Service transported her to the hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries and smoke inhalation.
The apartment reportedly sustained extensive smoke and heat damage.
