The Lincoln Head Start pre-school facility has been closed for the upcoming school year.

The change will apparently force students who had been slated to enroll to go to another Head Start facility or not enroll in the program. Existing centers for the federally-funded program in Fayetteville and Springdale will remain open.

Fayetteville-based Head Start director Ivory Conley declined to comment, saying that they had not announced they were going to close the Lincoln facility and referring comment to Kathleen Randall.

Randall is the director of the Economic Opportunity Council in Washington County. She could not be reached for comment Tuesday evening.

Another Head Start employee confirmed that the Lincoln center will not open for the year, but she asked not to be identified because employees had been told not to speak to the media on the matter.

The Lincoln center had 19 children ages 3 to 4 who were scheduled to attend the program.

There are no signs on the doors to the Lincoln facility indicating the change.

Lincoln Mayor Rob Hulse said the city owns the building and leases it to Head Start. Hulse said the city received official notification Tuesday from Head Start that the group no longer needs the facility.

Scott Davis of the Northwest Arkansas Times contributed to this article.
