Elkins to celebrate Independence Day on Saturday at Bunch Park

The city of Elkins will celebrate the nation’s independence a day late with Fourth on the River on Saturday.

According to a press release, the event starts at 11 a. m. with a parade that begins in the parking lot of Full Gospel Church on Harris Road and ends at Bunch Park, where the rest of the celebration will happen.

There will be a water slide, dunk tank, petting zoo, fishing derby, duck race and kids’ games. Concessions will be sold all day, and there will be a chicken dinner with meals for sale at 5 p. m. At 6: 30 p. m., the Elkins Police Department will challenge the Elkins Fire Department to a basketball game.

“ We’re trying to have events for all ages so that everyone can celebrate the nation’s birthday, ” Mayor Jack Ladyman said.

The night will bring live music from musicians including the Ridge Runners Band, Tampa Railroad and Kayla Horton. The celebration will end with fireworks, which start at 9: 30 p. m.

Event Coordinator Bonnie Wilcox encouraged families to attend.

“ I do it so the kids have memories of the small town they grew up in, ” she said.
