Gates open at 9 a.m. for Arkansas Horse Festival

The ninth annual Arkansas Horse Festival’s gates open at 9 a.m. today on the grounds of the Pauline Whitaker Animal Science Arena on Garland Avenue in Fayetteville. Admission at the gate is $5, allowing for all-day access to the festival’s outdoor activities. Children 12 and under are free. Spectators can also see a festival show in the indoor arena for an additional $10 per seat. Shows are at 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Seating is limited.
The two shows will include The One Arm Bandit, The Texas Trick Riders, highspeed drill teams, a stage coach and wagons, a Spanish dancing horse, a trained zebra, dozens of draft horses and a parade of breeds.
Outdoor arena performances include “Meet the Breeds,” jousting and medieval games by Mounted Fury, Cowboy Mounted Shooting by Boston Mountain Gunslingers, freestyle dressage by Frisians, a Gypsy dressage routine by Circ de Jose and a cavalry camp.
In the outdoor arena, clinicians will present tips and techniques to improve horsemanship, philosophies of colt starting, foundation training and problem-solving methods.
The D.E. King Equine Pavilion (the horse barn) will showcase ferrier James Luman demonstrating natural trimming. Steer roping will also be taught.
