The Fayetteville Board of Education narrowed the number of superintendent candidates to four following a closed session at its meeting Thursday evening.

The session took about an hour.

Board President Steve Percival said he wasn’t ready to announce who was selected for interviews until he had a chance to talk to the applicants. He said he expected to announce the four finalists today.

The applicants for the job included:

Randy Willison, an associate superintendent for Fayetteville and the only inhouse employee to apply for the job

Charles Abernathy, current superintendent of the Bryant School District

James Simmons, a former Conway superintendent and associate executive director for the Arkansas Association of Education Administrators

Robert Gray, Lead Hill superintendent

David Hurst, associate executive director for professional development, North Central Association, Tempe, Ariz.

Arthur Stellar, Taunton, Mass.

Michael Brophy, assistant superintendent of the Bethel School District in Spanaway, Wash.

Gary Norris, superintendent of the Sarasota (Fla. ) School District

Daniel Hudson, principal of Sarah T. Reed High School in New Orleans

Shannon Goodsell, of the Oklahoma City area

Another applicant recently accepted a different job in Arizona.

Current Superintendent Bobby New is scheduled to retire in June 2009. The current plan is to hire a superintendent-elect who would start working for the district next year and take over when New retires.
