Supporters of a Fayetteville alderman recently filed paper work in the Washington County Clerk’s Office creating the Lioneld Jordan campaign.
Jordan, a Ward 4 alderman and vice mayor, said in November that he was “ definitely in the hunt, ” but he has made no formal announcement or done any campaigning.
“ I’ve decided to run and will tentatively make the announcement March the ninth, ” Jordan said Thursday when contacted by phone.
The certificate filed with the county lists as campaign manager Donald A. Marr Jr., who formerly represented Ward 2 on the Fayetteville City Council before resigning to pursue business interests. Marr and William A. Moeller of Fayetteville, who is listed as campaign treasurer, filed the certificate Feb. 13.
Moeller, who has suppor ted Jordan since Jordan first ran for council in 2000, said the document was filed in order to set up a checking account for the campaign.
The campaign has received a few donations, Moeller said.
“ I am persuaded that he is an extremely effective public servant with his heart in the right place, ” Moeller said. “ He’s a man of the people. ”
Previously announced candidates for the 2008 mayoral race are Walt Eilers and Jeff Koenig. Mayor Dan Coody does not plan to seek re-election after eight years in office.
The official filing period for the Nov. 4 election is Aug. 6-26.
Jordan has served on the Fayetteville City Council since 2001. He is chairman of the Street Committee and a member of the Sewer and Equipment committees.
A Lioneld Jordan Web site, which will list events and a way to donate to the campaign online, is under construction. It features a photo of Jordan similar to the one on the city’s Web site, which identifies him as the Ward 4, Position 2 alderman.
