Arkansas pageant delegates needed Arkansas International pageant officials are looking for delegates to represent the Northwest Arkansas area at its state competition: married women between the ages of 21-56, miss contestants ages 19-29 and teens ages 13-18. Each new title holder will be awarded a crown and sash to represent her community at the state competition March 13-15. The pageant will be held at Jacksonville High School in Jacksonville and tickets are available at the door. A community service award will be given to the contestants with the most hours of volunteering. A mentoring program is set up with the Miss Teen Arkansas International and Miss Arkansas International Competitions, and the winners receive a cash scholarship. wins essay award Alyssa Tidwell of Holcomb Elementary School in Fayetteville won the fourth- and fifth-grade bracket of the “ Historic Moment in Arkansas” essay invitational, which was sponsored by the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and Radio Disney. Her essay was on the Sager Cabin in Siloam Springs. The winners were selected from among 878 entries from students who submitted 500-word essays on historic Arkansas properties. Essays included information on the property’s history, when and why it was built and its current function. Tidwell, along with other winners, will be presented with an 8 G Apple iPod.

Tour of Homes takes place Dec. 7 The Junior League of Northwest Arkansas will have its 10 th Annual Winter Dreams Tour of Homes from 11 a. m. to 5 p. m. Dec. 7. The event is sponsored by Wal-Mart, Embassy Suites, The Bank of Fayetteville, Bank of America and Stephens Inc. The 12 featured homes in both Benton and Washington Counties will be decorated for the holidays and range from historic to contemporary and casual to the unique. There are also two downtown Fayetteville condos featured on the tour: one in the Ice House Building off Dickson Street and another in the Campbell Building on the Fayetteville Square. There will also be a featured home decorated by Wal-Mart and items available in a silent auction. Tickets can be purchased for $ 20 prior to the tour at Signed, Sealed, Delivered and the Northwest Arkansas Mall, both in Fayetteville, and Fayetteville Arvest Bank locations. Tickets will also be available at each home on the day of the tour. Proceeds from the Winter Dreams Tour of Homes will help the Junior League of Northwest Arkansas fund various projects, partner agencies and shelters. UA students win presentation awards Two University of Arkansas undergraduate students won awards for poster and oral presentations during the Arkansas Infrastructure for Biomedical Research Excellence 2008 Research Conference on Nov. 7-8 at the University of Arkansas. Andrew Avery of Rogers won first place for his poster presentation in chemistry and biochemistry, and Alexander Kareev of Fayetteville won second place for his poster presentation in physics. The annual conference attracts large numbers of researchers in the fields of biology, physics and chemistry and biochemistry. More than 400 faculty, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students from Arkansas and the region attended lectures, exhibits and workshop sessions in the science disciplines during the two-day event. This year the poster session drew more than 100 entries. The annual fall conference is hosted by the departments of biological sciences, physics and chemistry and biochemistry in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas. Foundation donates books to libraries Fayetteville Public Library, Siloam Springs Public Library and Springdale Public Library were three of eight Northwest Arkansas libraries to receive a set of planned giving and endowment training books from Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation. The donation reveals the Foundation’s commitment to connecting donors to their charitable passions through initiatives that support the community, nonprofit organizations and philanthropy.

The books donated include “ Planned Giving for Small Nonprofits” by Ronald R. Jordan and Katelyn L. Quinn, “ The Art of Planned Giving ” by Douglas E. White, “ Building an Endowment Right from the Start ” by Lynda Moerschbaecher, “ Planned Giving Simplified” by Robert F. Sharpe Sr., “ Endowment Building” by Diana S. Newman and “ Building Your Endowment” by Edward C. Schumacher.

The books are designed to help both the donor and the organization meet longterm financial needs and philanthropic objectives.
