Local writers hear from former newspaper publisher

Shelly Moran, former publisher of the Herald-Leader newspaper, spoke to the Siloam Springs Writers as they met for their October meeting at Books on Broadway.
Her opening statement was I love words.
She gave a history of her life in newspaper publishing and brought items of interest such as a hot-metal type block, advertisement mat, and a wing maker.
Her family was owner of newspapers in Cabot for 25 years. She then gave the writers tips for submitting articles to the newspaper.
Awards for Septembers competition were: How To Article first place Rachel Kulp, How to Clean a Cat, second place Billie Hammers, How to Make a Flying Jenny. Poetry winners were: Limerick first place Rachel Kulp, A Ship in a Harbor, second place Margaret Weathers, Oops ! third place Shane Qualls, Theres a Guy Named Shane.
Interested writers are invited to attend the Nov. 6 meeting featuring Anita Burney as speaker. Burney will address the topic of writing a play. The competition assignments for November will be prose Im Thankful For... , and for poetry, a couplet poem. The meeting will begin at 7 p. m. at Books on Broadway, 201 Broadway Street in Siloam Springs.
