Herald-Leader staff brings home APA awards

Siloam Springs Herald-Leader received four first place awards in the annual Arkansas Press Association's newspaper contest. The honors were handed out during an awards banquet Saturday in North Little Rock. Staff writer Jeff Della Rosa won two first place awards for feature story and picture page / photo essay. The winning story was titled, Journey to a jump, and the picture page was called, It's great to SK 8. The press association awarded sports editor Tim Ritter first place for sports news story. It was titled, Our time is NOW. Sarah Gatling, former managing editor, received first place for headline writing. The headline was, Market on your calendar. The Herald-Leader was named the third best large weekly newspaper in the state.
The APA awarded the paper third place in general excellence among weekly newspapers of its size.
The Herald-Leaderstaff won second place awards for the special issue, Strides 2007, and features page.
Gatling, Della Rosa, Ben McVay and staff writer Jessica Weekley took third place for best front page.
McVay, who is a former staff writer, also won third place for single news photograph, What a lot of bull.
Ritter also won second and third place for single sports action photographs, Dynamic dynasty and Our time is now.
Della Rosa also received third place for in-depth series reporting for coverage on the Sex shop ordinance.
Publisher John Dilmore Jr. was awarded first place for the editorial ti- tor for the Benton County Daily Recordfor three years before becoming the Herald-Leader publisher in May, received this award in the larger dailies category.
Work the Herald-Leadersubmitted for the contest was judged in the larger weeklies category.
Members of the Alabama Press Association judged the contest.
"We are very proud of our staff and their dedication to making this newspaper the best source in Siloam Springs for local news," said Gary Burton, managing editor for the Herald-Leader. "I'm thirlled that the judges recognized the talent we have here and honored them."
John Dilmore, publisher for the Herald-Leader, said he was pleased with the honors the staff received.
"These awards are a direct reflection of how committed the staff at the Herald-Leader is to bringing our readers the very best in local coverage."
