Burton joins Herald-Leader staff

Gary Burton has joined the staff of the Siloam Springs Herald-Leader as the newspaper's managing editor.

Burton comes to the area from Clarskville, Tenn., but is no stranger to Arkansas journalism.

He has worked at the Times-Herald in Forrest City, the Daily World in Helena-West Helena, and the Wynne Progress in Wynne during his decade of experience with daily and weekly publications.

Burton received two second-place awards during the 2002 Associated Press Managing Editor's awards for his investigative journalism work on the Helena school district superintendent and school board.

He has also served as farm editor for the Kentucky New Era newspaper in Hopkinsville, Ky., copy editor for the Fort Campbell (Ky. ) Courier newspaper, and was managing editor for the White House Watch in White House, Tenn.

He and his wife, Mary, have two children: Anissa, 8, and William, 20 months. He also has a teenage daughter, Jessie, living in Fort Smith.

"I'm looking forward to serving this community with local journalism that residents can be proud of," he said. "Siloam Springs has welcomed me with open arms since my arrival and has made me feel very welcome."
