‘My Hero’ topic of contest for student writers

The annual Siloam Springs Writers' Student Awards Ceremony was held May 8 in the Siloam Springs Senior Activity Center with approximately 90 students, parents and members present. The theme this year for both prose and poetry was "My Hero."
Opening prayer was offered by president Margaret Weathers. Following opening remarks, Rosemary Matthews, contest chair, presented the awards and prizes as follows Kindergarten Prose winners were Savannah Downey, Claudia Mercado, Ian Hilderbrand, Rebekah Rodgers, Makynzee Hill and Kate Shaw.
First Grade Prose: 1 st, Chloe McGooden; 2 nd, Kendall Nelson; 3 rd, Kassidy Lane; Honorable mention, Jared Frye, Katie Kendrick.
First Grade Poetry: 1 st, Maci Davis; 2 nd; Tristan Moten; 3 rd, Liliana Navarrete; HM, Justin Davidson.
Second Grade Prose: 1 st, Courtney Austin; 2 nd, Kayla Ellis; 3 rd, Ashley Burton; HM, Samantha Santillan, Seth Fleig.
Third Grade Prose: 1 st, Megan Rodgers; 2 nd, Ivy Martin; 3 rd, tie, Larine Freiburger, Casey Moten; HM, Ryke Beever, Andlin Skidmore.
Third Grade Poetry: 1 st, Britain Castagna; 2 nd, Megan Rodgers; 3 rd, Victoria Carroll.
Fourth Grade Prose: 1 st, Sidney Avery; 2 nd, Kaitlyn Stringfellow; 3 rd, Devon French; HM, Bethany Rodgers.

Eleventh Grade Prose: 1 st, Ginger Macfarlan. Eleventh Grade Poetry: lst, Austin Wise; 2 nd, Ginger Macfarlan. Margaret Weathers awarded winners from our recent Writers'Club poetry and prose contests as follows: December Poetry: 1 st, Tom Palmer; 2 nd, Rosemary Matthews; 3 rd, Maxine McKenzie. April Poetry: 1 st, Rachel Kulp; 2 nd, Roy Eslick; 3 rd, Billie Hammers. April Prose: 1 st, Rachel Kulp; 2 nd, Roy Eslick.
Writing Assignments for the June 5 meeting are "A Patriotic Story"and a triolet poem on any subject. David Eslick will be the featured speaker. The public is invited to participate and attend the meeting which begins at 7 p.m. at a location to be announced later. For more information, call 524-6598.
