Gentry sweeps doubleheader

GENTRY ó With just two games remaining in conference play, the Gentry Babe Ruth 15-year-oldsí team built a threegame lead Thursday with a doubleheader sweep over the Gravette 15-year-olds. Game One Gentry 8, Gravette 6 With the score tied four to four in the sixth inning, Gravette scored one to go ahead. Eli Blackmon led off Gentryís last frame with a base on balls. Dustin Torres followed with a double. With runners on second and third, Justin Bryant cracked a two-RBI double to give Gentry the lead. Following two outs, Cody Stewart knocked in Bryant with a base hit and later scored on Kolby Rankinís single.
Gravette, however, was not ready to give up. They rallied, but could only plate one runner before a one-out, basesloaded soft liner to third baseman Cody Jones. Jones caught the drive and stepped on third to end the threat and the game.
Cody Stewart threw the first five innings for Gentry, giving up four hits and striking out six. Kyle Oliva followed Stewart and closed out the game, allowing just one hit, He struck out one batter.
Offensively, Gentry was led with two hits each by Torres, Bryant and Oliva. Jones, Stewart, Jarrod Runyan and Rankin also had hits in the 10-hit attack. Game two Gentry 11, Gravette 4 Gentry jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the second inning. They added seven more in the third, highlighted by Cody Stewartís two-RBI triple, and added two more in the fourth. In toll, Gentry recorded 16 hits. Kolby Rankin, Cody Jones and Justin Bryant each had three hits. Stewart and Jarrod Runyan added two hits apiece. Kyle Oliva, Gunter DeZurik and Gary David Williamson each contributed base hits.
Gravette never put together a solid threat. They picked up one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Cody Jones threw a complete game for the win. Jones took a no-hitter into the last inning before yielding two hits. He struck out 12 Gravette batters in the effort.
Gentryís record after the Gravette games was 16-1-1.
