DECATUR ó Applications for the Miss Decatur Barbecue Pageant, to be held on August 1, are being accepted through July 15.

A new award will be presented this year ó Hometown Horizons ó for girls who live in Decatur. Pageant coordinator June Walls explained the new award is designed to encourage girls from Decatur to participate in the contest. The winner will be determined by a special question during the interview session.

Girls between the ages of 15 and 19 are eligible to enter the pageant. This yearís pageant will include an interview, casual wear and evening gown contest. The swim-wear portion of the contest has been replaced with the casual wear this year. Walls said the casual-wear contest will give the participants a chance to wear an enjoyable outfit which represents them and shows their personality.

The winner of the Miss Decatur Barbecue pageant will represent the town at the Miss Benton County Fair pageant.

In 1990, Melanie McGarrah of Centerton, won the Miss Decatur Barbecue Pageant. She went on to become Miss Arkansas and then placed in the Miss America Pageant.

Walls said contestants are encouraged ó although not required ó to ride in the Decatur Barbecue Parade.

Applications can be picked up at the Decatur State Bank or at city hall. The application fee is $ 35. A picture, printed by a photo lab, must be included with the application and will be printed in the Decatur Herald before the pageant.
