Gracing the front cover of the 2009 Arkansas Artists Engagement Calendar is Bella Vistan Charles Harrington’s acrylic painting of McKissic Creek.

“ Bridge Over McKissic Creek ” was the winning selection from 231 submitted works of art. The painting has been purchased by the Arkansas Governor’s Mansion Association and now hangs in the governor’s dining room.

Sales of the 2009 date book benefit the association, which uses the money for maintenance and restoration of the manor, as well as purchasing art for the mansion’s collection.

Ginger Beebe, first lady of Arkansas, traveled the state on a book-signing tour this past summer to promote the fundraiser.

In October, Beebe appeared at Crystal Bridges at the Massey in Bentonville with a dozen of the featured artists, including Harrington.

Landing the cover of the engagement calendar is one of many accomplishments Harrington has achieved in the art world.

Harrington taught at Louisiana Technical University for 23 years, both architecture and fine-art courses. He remains a dedicated teacher at workshops around, and outside of, the country.

He spent August as the artist in residence at the Buffalo National River. He and his wife, Daphne, spent three days in a house right on the water to “ absorb the atmosphere, to really get to know the spirit of the river, ” Harrington said.

The National Oil and Acrylic Painter’s Society bestowed an Award of Excellence to Harrington in 2008, and he has had numerous paintings juried into exhibition.

He is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.

Harrington is the author of “ Acrylics, the Watercolor Alternative, ” a guide to painting with acrylics that was published in 2005. He also has made two instructional videos.

Original paintings, prints, books, videos and additional information about the artist can be found on his Web site, http: // charlesharrington. com.

The 2009 Arkansas Artists Engagement Calendar is available for $ 25 through the Web site www. friendsofthemansion. org, or call (501 ) 324-9805.
