BENTON COUNTY - Gravette sophomore Michael Croasdell won one of track and field's marquee events late Wednesday night at the Class 4 A State Track and Field Meet in Nashville.

Croasdell won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11. 22 seconds, earning a spot at next week's Meet of Champions at Lake Hamilton High School near Hot Springs.

Event winners from each state meet (1 A through 7 A ) plus the five top performances after that from any classification qualify for the MOC on May 21.

"Can you believe it," Gravette coach Kevin Cole said Wednesday. "When he finally slowed down enough he jumped straight up and pumped his fists in the air. He was pretty excited. We were all pretty excited."

Earlier this month Croasdell won the 100 at the 1-4 A Conference Meet with a wind-aided time of 11. 09 at Lions Stadium. The Nashville girls and De Queen boys won team titles Wednesday night. Complete results from Croasdell's victory and other events were not available.

"I was just following the kid in orange in the front," Cole said.

Croasdell, a starter for Gravette's state semifinal football team last year, also finished third in the 200.

Lady Lions freshman Shelby Newell was third in the long jump (16 feet ) and second in the triple jump (35-2 ) at the state meet. Cole says Newell stands a good chance of qualifying for the MOC in the triple jump.
