Area soccer players named All-State

BENTONVILLE — The Bentonville Lady Tigers placed four players on the Class 7 A All-State soccer team after a state-runner up season in 2008.
The Bentonville boys’ soccer team had two players named All-State while the Rogers Mounties and Lady Mounties had three and two, respectively.
Junior forward Cortney Sanders earned All-State honors for the Lady Tigers (24-2-1 ) after setting a new single-season school record of 32 goals scored for the 7 A-West Conference champions.
Sanders was assisted many times this season by sophomore midfielder April Miller, who scored 19 goals, including the game-winning goal for the Lady Tigers against Rogers in Bentonville’s 1-0 double-overtime win in the state semifinals.
Sheila Helms, who moved from defender to midfield, earned All-State honors for the second straight season for BHS. Helms scored 4 goals on the year.
Junior midfielder Hannah Nilsson also earned All-State honors for the Lady Tigers.
For the Tigers, who finished 13-7-1 and lost in the state quarterfinals to undefeated state champion Conway, junior forward Esteban Vanegas and center defender Damon Hymas earned All-State honors.
Hymas earned All-State honors for the second consecutive season while Vanegas garnered the honor for the first time. Vanegas led the Tigers with 15 goals scored on the season. Rogers
The 2008 season was one of the best ever for the Rogers boys’ soccer team and the Mounties had three players named All-State after going 17-5-1 and finishing second in the 7 A-West Conference.
The Mounties advanced to the Class 7 A semifinals before losing to Conway 3-1.
Sophomore forward Spencer Dunlop, who scored 20 goals to lead Rogers, was named All-State as was senior midfielder Matt Marsh and junior defender Henry Wildenborg.
Marsh scored four goals and was a team captain while Wildenborg played stopper for Rogers and scored three goals.
For the Lady Mounties, Megan Dougherty and Alyvia Rogers earned All-State honors for the second consecutive season.
Dougherty, a Furman signee, battled a stress fracture in her leg and missed several games but still scored 9 goals for the Lady Mounties (15-9-1 ). Rogers, the 2007 Gatorade Player of the Year, signed with Tulsa and scored 6 goals. Siloam Springs
The Siloam Springs soccer teams placed five players on the Class 5 A All-State team.
For the 5 A-West Conference champion Panthers, Ramon Gomez, Josh Trotter and Stewart Zimmerman were named All-State. Misty Brown and Adrienne Kennedy earned honors for the Lady Panthers.
