The loss of Tim Summers, who resigned as District 8 justice of the peace to seek a spot in the state Legislature, will be felt by the Benton County Quorum Court. Summers’ command of issues facing the county — especially budgetary issues — was a valuable asset.

But the impact of Summers’ departure will be softened significantly, we feel, if voters choose Shirley Sandlin as his replacement. Sandlin, who served as Benton County tax assessor for 20 years before retiring from the post two years ago, understands better than most how the county works, and why it works the way it does.

Her opponent, Lance Rettig, has an impressive background with Wal-Mart’s International Division, and strikes us as a leader in the making. He says he’ll find a way to serve the community whether he wins this race or not, and we’re glad to hear it.

But Sandlin is the right choice for District 8 JP.
