Bentonville holds off Basic Block at Zone 1 baseball tourney

FAYETTEVILLE — At the American Legion AAA Zone 1 Baseball Tournament that began Thursday, No. 4-seeded Bentonville Outdoor Cap scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to win 11-9 in a late first-round game at Fayetteville High School.
With the win, Bentonville is now faced with the task of playing the top-seeded Fayetteville Lindsey and Associates Dodgers tonight at 7: 30. The Braves fall into the losers bracket and next see action on Saturday at 10 a. m. against the loser of tonight’s Fort Smith Kerwins and Fort Smith Coke matchup.
Offense was prevalent as Basic Block tallied 15 hits for the game, but errors got the better of the Braves as they were charged with five miscues.
Second up for the Braves in the opening inning, Brandon Miller deposited a home run over the left-field wall for an early 1-0 Basic Block lead. Bentonville’s Buster Gean tied the game 1-1, scoring off a ball hit by Ethan McKenzie.
Basic Block went up briefly 4-1 as Wes Kahl reached on a single and, two batters later, came home on Justin Darty’s two-run homer. Dylan Brooks followed with a double and came across on a Tyler Stone groundout.
Dan Beahm hit a bases-loaded, three-run double as Bentonville tied things up 4-4 in the third inning.
Basic Block was plagued by a pair of errors in Bentonville’s three-run fifth. Outdoor Cap picked up a double off the bat of Erin McGee, along with singles from Adam Seal and Matt Garza.
Basic Block cut the lead to 8-7 with two runs in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. Jake Adkins tripled, plating Wes Kahl, who reached on an earlier Bentonville error. Darty singled, as did Dylan Brooks, who drove in a run.
Bentonville outscored the Braves 3-2 over the final two innings to hold on for the win. FS Coke 9, Rogers Kent Rylee Chevrolet 4
Fort Smith Coke showed it was better than its sixth seed in Thursday’s early game. At one time, Coke led third-seeded Rogers 9-0 before holding off the Kent Rylee boys, 9-4.
Coke’s 12-hit attack was paced by David Hadley (3-for-4, home run ) and Kade Rudolph (2-for-4, home run ). The Fort Smith team put seven runs on the board in the first two innings.
After going scoreless and registering just four hits in the first six innings, Rogers broke into the run column in its seventh.
Kent Rylee loaded the bases and took full advantage in the inning. Grant Wise delivered the big blow with a two-run double. Seth White’s double plated a run as did McKenzie Matthews ’ groundout single in the four-run inning.
