BENTONVILLE — Faith Lund drove home the winning run and the Bentonville Lady Tigers came from behind late to clip the Gentry Lady Pioneers 3-2 here Monday.

Lund had Bentonville’s only extra base hit of the game, a triple that rolled to deep right field scoring Jackie Saumweber for the lead in the sixth inning.

Bentonville (1-0 ) picked up two runs earlier that inning on two Gentry throwing errors. One sailed from the third baseman to second base and into right field, allowing Courtney Dean to score. The other from the Gentry catcher went down the third base line into left field, allowing Meg McGuirt to score and tie the game at 2.

Up until then, Gentry kept Bentonville in check, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth.

“ A good game ‘ up until then’ will get you beat is what we say, ” Gentry coach Marian Killgore said. “ We need to clean up those throws and do better.

“ That’s why we play teams like Bentonville. They make us better. We knew they weren’t going to lie down and quit. You’ve got to play seven innings in this game. ”

Gentry (0-1 ) threatened to take a lead in the fifth inning when Shimy Holt’s two-out double up the third base line rolled to the wall. Courtney Jones followed with a walk.

Lund, the winning pitcher, got Bentonville out of the jam with a strikeout.

She wasn’t so fortunate in the sixth.

Megan Meigs singled to lead off the inning. Katie Bowman followed with a misplayed single to center field that allowed Meigs to score. Chelsea Barker bunted home Bowman for the 2-0 lead.

Bentonville’s Dean had a leadoff walk and scored on the wide throw to second base from a bunt by McGuirt. Saumweber followed McGuirt with a bunt.

“ This was our second day on the field all semester, ” Bentonville coach Kent Early said. “ We were a little nervous. We made some errors. We’re just shaking the kinks out. ”

Cheyenne McFerron saved two runs for Gentry in the first inning. McGuirt and Saumweber were on base with an error and a bunt. McFerron made a spectacular catch between center and left field of a hard hit ball by Tandie Bailey. McFerron then threw out McGuirt, who left second base early.

Lund pitched the win, striking out five while giving up five hits and walking one.

Kelsey Duncan took the loss, striking out three while giving up three hits. Duncan faced just nine batters from the third through the fifth innings.
