BELLA VISTA - Enthusiastic and eager to share his piano expertise with others, Adam Mangold will present his first solo concert at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Institute of Music, Worship and the Arts, 2262 Forest Hills Blvd.

Mangold, 17, said he learned he could play the piano by ear when he was 5. A teacher would play a few notes and chords, then ask Mangold to play them. He easily repeated the notes and chords long before he knew how to read music.

"I do both," Mangold said. "I play by ear and I read music. I love to play and have a baby grand piano in my room at home. For the concert, I'm playing some classical and some jazz. I'll be playing all kinds of different music Sunday."

The concert is free and open to the public.

Piano teacher Carolyn Buss has taught Mangold for approximately five years.

"Adam has such a strong ear," Buss said. "We've worked to build his music reading skills, and he's done really well. He has a two-hour lesson on Friday evenings from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Most teenagers would protest having piano lessons at that time; however, Adam is always happy and ready to play. I can be tired at the end of the week, and when Adam comes in, because of his wonderful attitude, I'm refreshed.

"Adam is such a joy to teach, and just as Johann Sebastian Bach did, he gives the glory to God."

Mangold, a student at Northwest Arkansas Academy of Fine Arts in Rogers, plans to pursue music in college. So far, he's undecided about which college or university he plans to attend.
