ROGERS - Since practicing yoga in hopes of alleviating back pain, Pamela Porch has received much more than freedom from back problems.
Porch, in fact, became a yoga instructor more than 10 years ago. She teaches a variety of yoga classes at the RabBoar Studio in Rogers. She and Larry Owensby are offering special workshops in January. Owensby, also a student of yoga, has had special training in sounding a gong. The Yoga and Gong Therapy Workshops are aimed toward participants wanting to eliminate addictions.
Yoga and Gong Therapy are heralded as adding tremendous help with breaking dependence on substances and situations from nicotine addictions, releasing the desire for unhealthy food or support through chemotherapy. Class members will experience Kundalini Yoga, which stems from the tantra yoga path and was introduced to the West in 1969. The popularity of Kundalini Yoga has grown, particularly among those seeking enlightenment, calmness and a greater sense of focusing on the present, as well as physical benefits.
The words of Mehtab Benton - Austin, Texas, yogi and gong master - "... the sound of the gong can promote a positive change in the listener. The sound of the gong creates deep relaxation, releasing us from the torrents of thought our mind releases, and it stimulates the glandular system to a higher form of functioning." Along with Kundalini Yoga, gong therapy has been among the top 10 percent of effective treatments for drug addicts in Tucson, Ariz.
"I especially appreciate how yoga brings you back in touch with your body," instructor Porch said. "It's been such a blessing in my life and I'm glad I can help others realize the benefits possible from yoga."
From the first time Owensby heard the gong, he said his life changed.
"It was like God was talking to me," Owensby explained. "It was so powerful. I knew I wanted to know more about it. I'm so glad I was able to study in Austin. The sound of the gong is difficult to describe; but once you've heard it, I think changes are much easier to make. I'm looking forward to the workshop."
The workshop will be offered two Saturdays, Jan. 10 and Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; or during the regularly scheduled Kundalini Yoga classes from 5:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays. Eliminate Addictions and Reduce Fear is the title of the Jan. 10 class. On Jan. 24, the class title is Immune Support and Cleanse.
Dates of the Tuesday classes and their topics are: Jan. 6, Eliminate Addictions; Jan. 13, Reduce Fear; Jan. 20, Immune Support; and Jan. 27, Cleanse. Prices for all four sessions and the handout is $35. The cost of the two Saturday workshops and the handout is also $35.
