A collection of Christmas aromas is beginning to fill the air in many homes in our area as the big day draws near — fresh Christmas trees, baked goods in the oven and Christmas candles sitting on the mantel. The aroma of candles is one of the simple things that make a house feel like a home. Used carefully, candles can add a lot of pleasure to the holiday season.

As with any open flame, keep candles away from other combustible materials. Curtains, towels, lampshades and paper items can all ignite from exposure to a candle’s flame. Don’t leave a candle burning when you leave your home or when you go to bed at night. The aroma will linger for quite a while even after the candle is put out, but without the danger of an open flame.

Even candles on a birthday cake present a fire risk. As someone celebrating a birthday leans over to blow out the candles, his or her hair or face may be too close for comfort. Supervise smaller children with this portion of the celebration to keep it a happy occasion. Candles are an extra we can enjoy anytime of the year, but always remember to keep safety in mind.
