Bentonville City Council to discuss block grant, budget

BENTONVILLE — Several local agencies would be helped if the city of Bentonville’s application for a Community Development Block Grant gets final government approval.
Before federal approval can be reached, however, the city’s plan for the 2009 grant year must be approved by the Bentonville City Council, so the action plan is on the agenda for this week’s council meeting. The council is also expected to start budget discussions.
The Committee of the Whole will meet at 6 p. m. Monday in the Planning Commission’s meeting room, 305 S. W. A St. The regular council meeting will be at 6 p. m. Wednesday in the same location. The meeting date was changed because of Veterans Day.
Bentonville became a CDBG entitlement city in June 2003, and this year’s grant application is for $ 180, 000, according to the agenda. The action plan includes helping several agencies, as well as making infrastructure improvements within the city.
According to the action plan listed in the agenda, the grant would fund the following projects:
• Providing rental-voucher assistance for residents of the Havenwood Women’s Shelter;
• Acquiring land to build housing for Habitat for Humanity of Benton County;
• Providing administrative services for Rebuilding Together of Northwest Arkansas;
• Providing scholarships for the Boys and Girls Club of Benton County;
• Providing child-care scholarships for the Helen R. Walton Children’s Enrichment Center;
• Replacing the existing water line on Southeast G Street between Third and Fourth streets;
• Helping with trail design; and
• Continuing a draining improvement project from last year’s funds.
The grant also includes money to fund direct program administration.
Other agenda items include the following:
• Voting on a lot-split application from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. for a parcel of unplatted land at 301 S. E. J St. that is currently the site of Mohawk Manufacturing;
• Accepting a resignation from Rod Sanders, councilman;
• Declaring some items as surplus so they can be sold at auction;
• Authorizing the mayor to sell land to the Benton-Washington Regional Public Water Authority; and
• Awarding a bid to Graybar Electric for three-phase transformers.
