Centerton-Gamble developing play area

BENTONVILLE — A new basketball court and soccer field now provide some much-needed play area for hundreds of students at Centerton-Gamble Elementary School.
Principal Cindy Dewey said that with the school’s number of students, it did not have not enough outdoor equipment to offer all students activities during recess.
Centerton-Gamble has more than 600 students in kindergarten through the fourth grade.
The school had one multistation playground, and it couldn’t accommodate all the students. This year, the school has focused its fundraising efforts on purchasing more outdoor equipment. Recently, the Centerton Kiwanis Club donated the labor and materials involved with constructing a slab and surrounding area for the new basketball court, Dewey said.
“ The kids love it, ” she said.
The school used some leftover money from fundraising last year to purchase soccer goals for another area of the playground, she said. One of the school’s next goals is to purchase equipment specifically for younger students.
“ The (play equipment ) we have is too tall for the little ones, ” Dewey said.
The students appreciate the new equipment and look forward to future installations.
“ It’s great because we can have fun on it, and there’s more to do, ” student Mandy Rotenberry said.
For Kayanne Reid, the new basketball and soccer areas offer the students the opportunity for group activities.
“ We get to play on it and play with others, ” she said.
