BENTONVILLE — Capt. Mike Sydoriak will soon have an opportunity to complete one of his goals for his law-enforcement career.

Sydoriak, who heads the Benton County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation division, will participate in a three-month training academy with the FBI in Quantico, Va.

“ I’ve always wanted take part in the training, but never thought I would have the chance, ” Sydoriak said. “ It’s late in my career, but it is something that will be beneficial to the department. ”

Sydoriak, who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 28 years, will be the first Benton County Sheriff’s Office deputy to participate in the program.

According to Sydoriak, when BCSO Capt. Mike Jones began at the Sheriff’s Office, it was his goal to provide more training for deputies.

Jones had completed the training course and submitted Sydoriak’s name to FBI officials.

The three-month course includes six classes dealing with crimes from counterterrorism to computer crimes, Sydoriak said.

There also is physicaleducation course, he said.

Sydoriak did get a bit of advice from FBI officials.

“ They told me to run, ” Sydoriak said.

Physical exercise had not exactly been a hobby for Sydoriak over the years, but he did begin running this past spring.

He now runs two miles each morning and has lost about 30 pounds.

Sydoriak will report to the academy on Sept. 28.

Jones will be in charge of the CID while Sydoriak attends the academy.

Sergeants Dennis Schumacher and Jarred Crabtree will also take more of a leadership role in Sydoriak’s absence.
