BENTONVILLE — The Bentonville Board of Education’s Personnel Committee discussed plans for the timeline of hiring the next principal of Bentonville High School — and hopes to fill the position by April 2009.

At the committee’s meeting Monday, Bentonville School District Superintendent Gary Compton presented the committee with a draft of a timeline and procedure for hiring the BHS principal.

The committee contended that with Bentonville in a prime spot and the school district one of the top districts in the country, the position can be a lure to top candidates.

The tentative schedule calls for the search to begin in November, when the position will be posted in a number of media sources, and the recruitment and initial eligibility screening process will begin.

In December, a hiring advisory committee of certified and classified staff, administrators, parents, community leaders and board members will be formed.

The hiring process will involve intensive efforts to attract a large, diverse pool of candidates from within and outside the school district.

Candidates will be evaluated by Compton and Human Resources Director Steve Potts for initial interviews. This process will remain confidential until finalists are chosen for the position, Compton said, in order to protect potential candidates at their current schools or districts.

“ Years ago, it was a very different time; everything was wide open. … Our goal here would be to try and protect everybody until we get to the very end, ” he said.
