GRAVETTE — The story about the little white poodle that managed to survive the elements captured the attention of many people. The little waif with matted hair and spindly legs was seen by those who traveled busy Arkansas Highway 59 across from the Shop ’n Go station.
Was it lost ?
Had it been dumped by its former owner ?
There is no definitive answer.
But the fact that it would stand alongside the highway, watching, waiting indicated to some that it missed its master.
The poodle evaded capture. It ran from everyone. Possibly because so many chased it trying to snare it with a net, trap it in a live trap or just chased it.
The pursuit was not meant in harm. It was meant to care for the little animal. To find it a home. To give it the love that it needed. And craved.
The story ends.
After so many weeks of the poodle dodging heavy trucks and hundreds of cars each day, the inevitable happened Monday afternoon. The tiny poodle was struck by a passing motorist. Witnesses said the driver never stopped. Never looked back.
The poodle will be missed by those who placed food and water for it. Those who so badly wanted to help it find a home. They are to be commended.
And if the owner of the little poodle merely dumped it to fend for itself, to face the inevitable ? Shame. Shame.
