BENTONVILLE - The Bentonville City Council has given the go-ahead for a landscaped gateway to be placed at the intersection of Interstate 540 and Southeast Walton Boulevard.
The entrance will be just off Southeast Walton Boulevard's intersection with Moberly Lane.
The entrance will include a large, 200-foot-long brick sign that will emerge from hilly ground and be emblazoned with the city's name. The new entrance will have lowmaintenance boxwoods and shrubs, as well as an irrigation system to ease regular maintenance.
Because the gateway is in a right of way owned by the state, the plans must go before the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department for approval.
Also, while the state forbids use of any of its right of way for utility lines, the gateway's irrigation system will be provided through existing water lines on Moberly Lane.
The project is funded by a portion of $ 300, 000 earmarked for landscaping and gateway-improvement projects as part of the Parks Department bond issue approved by voters in 2007.
The city's Tree and Landscape Committee has been working for several months on a number of projects to improve the city's gateways and to welcome visitors to the city.
The first completed project is landscaping at the entrance of the North Bentonville Trail, committee member Chris Sooter said. The committee has also completed island landscaping on John DeShields Boulevard between Moberly Lane and Northeast J Street.
