BENTONVILLE — There were no new, verified candidates for municipal office in Benton County on Thursday.

All candidates who submitted petitions through Wednesday are verified candidates. But a statewide test of a computer system required the system to be shut down Thursday, and verification of any more municipal candidates won’t take place until Monday, said Brenda McClain, deputy clerk of voter registration.

People who on Thursday submitted paperwork that candidates are required to submit are not verified candidates and won’t be before at least Monday, McClain emphasized.

On Thursday, some 11 people submitted completed Political Practice Pledges — part of the paperwork that candidates are required to submit — in an office of the Benton County clerk. But as of Thursday, they weren’t yet verified candidates, McClain said.

Unverified candidates who submitted Political Practice Pledges Thursday were Avoca alderman W. Herb Hawkins, Position 5; Gravette alderman Kurt Maddox, Ward 3 Position 2; Bella Vista alderman Richard “ Dick” Rooney, Ward 2 Position 2; Bella Vista alderman Jim Parsons, Ward 3 Position 2; Bentonville alderman W. P. “ Bill” Burckart, Ward 3 Position 2; Centerton alderman Keith Higginbotham, Ward 2 Position 1; Centerton alderman Thomas Laird, Ward 3 Position 1; Gentry alderman Dearl D. Peachee, Ward 4 Position 2; Highfill recorder-treasurer Stacy Digby; Springtown alderman Paul T. Lemke, Position 3; and Sulphur Springs alderman Martha Kreder, Ward 1 Position 2.

Candidate packets are available throughout the county. They must be returned to the Benton County Clerk’s office by noon Aug. 26.
