4-H pullet show and sale on Aug. 23

BENTON COUNTY — As more individuals merge into rural areas of Benton County, the desire to have a backyard poultry flock may occur. A major task is to find birds of the right age and health status in order to achieve initial success. In that regard, the timing couldn’t be better.
4-H members will hold their annual Pullet Show and Sale on Saturday at Curran’s Feed Store in Gentry. Beginning at 8: 30 a. m., the show will be judged by University of Arkansas poultry specialist Dr. Keith Bramwell, followed by presentation of awards.
At 9 a. m., all pullet exhibits will be sold for premium at an auction to be conducted by Jim Rieff of Rogers. The pullets will then be resold to individuals who want them for home egg production.
4-H project pullets are Bovan Browns, also referred to as Golden Comets or Cinnamon Queens. The pullets were raised under University of Arkansas poultry-management and disease-prevention guidelines. Most pullets are already laying and, when well managed, will provide long-term egg production.
The participation of premium sponsors serves to provide funds, which are awarded to 4-H members for successful completion of the project.
Businesses or individuals interested in participating in the auction or providing project support at any level may contact Robert L. Seay at 271-1060 or Rseay @ uaex. edu.
