The event was put on by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The teens cooked over fires, slept in sleeping bags protected with tarps and used handcarts.
"It was just such an awesome experience," said Marissa Johnson, 15, of Bentonville.
The teens were divided into "families"with adult leaders. The families cooked, played and pushed the handcarts together. They told stories of pioneer ancestors or forebears who had crossed the plains to escape religious persecution in Missouri and Illinois.
Todd Mains, who helped organize the trek, was impressed at how the youth told him that "they had really come to not only become friends with the others in their'family' but really grew to love them.
